The Object of Desire was a five-month collaborative Camden Alive commission by artist Magda Fabianczyk, architect Benjamin Perrot, experimental weaver Joygun Nehar, CityMine(d) and Somers Town residents. Based on co-creation, placemaking and mediation, the project thought to engage diverse local talents, priorities and needs. From May to October 2019 a series of creative workshops and meetings took place in and around Levita House Garden, culminating in a one-day public celebration of community growing and art.
Preceded by an extensive research period The Object of Desire initially focused on a semi-public garden, which became a space for assembling discussing and growing ideas alongside plants and vegetables. Residents and artists engaged in a collaborative and discursive art making processes, which were structured around designing furniture, weaving and embroidering. Together they tested new ways of inhabiting the garden, and innovative ways of using local resources and networks, concentrating their efforts on selfcare, sustainability and collectiveness.
The Object of Desire was supported by Arts Catalyst, Cheezelo, Gazelle Dates, Saunders seasoning, The story garden.
